Críticas:
"This pair of companion volumes provide what is at once an elegant, rich and stimulating overview of the fedgling field becoming known as 'developmental neuropsychiatry'. They provide an excellent introduction to this topic area. For such as ambitious, single authored work, the breadth and clarity of coverage is remarkable, the indexing clear, and the referencing both detailed and up to date." ―Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry

"Very useful compendium of current state-of-the-art knowledge in developmental disorders....A trendsetter for the future."―American Journal on Mental Retardation

"Developmental Neuropsychiatry should be a required textbook in any program in developmental pediatrics, child neurology and psychiatry or pediatric cognitive neuroscience. All professionals who encounter children with developmental disabilities will find it a valuable reference. As Joseph T. Coyle states in the foreword, this work undoubtedly 'sets the agenda for this emerging clinical specialty.'"―The New England Journal of Medicine

"An integrated yet comprehensive conceptual approach to developmental neuropsychiatry. Grounded in neuroscience but enriched by clinical realities, the first volume provides the unified vision of the "new" psychiatry, which places the brain at the epicenter of psychopathology and recognizes the essential interplay between intrinsic vulnerabilities and life experience. The second volume translates this unifying neuroscientific perspective into the practical clinical issues of the diagnosis and management of specific developmental disorders....This two-volume set will be an essential resource not only for physicians but all professionals involved in the treatment of developmental disorders."―From the Foreword by Joseph T. Coyle, Chairman, Consolidated Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

"Notable for presenting material and references not commonly available to most general of child/adolescent psychiatrists and other mental health professionals not specializing in work with developmentally disabled....So easily read yet encyclopedic in its purview...is ideal for a quick but comprehensive overview of neuropsychiatry as a whole (Volume I) and of mental retardation and developmental disorders in particular (Volume II)."―General Hospital Psychiatry

"Commendable endeavor....These two volumes bring together important background material...Informative for diverse professionals interested in mental health."―Journal of Neuropsychiatry

"Dr. Harris is a true educator. He makes the difficult seem easy."―The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease

"The clinician who reads this work will...take away a sense of excitement in the promise that the explosion of neuroscience research provides for...patients, and further, a sense of pride in knowing that there is so much to offer to persons with developmental neuropsychiatric disorders."―Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

"...a scholarly tour de force....a must for developmental pediatricians, child psychiatrists, and clinical child psychologists."―Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

Reseña del editor:
James Harris's two volume work on developmental neuropsychiatry sets the agenda for this emerging clinical specialty. Written by an individual with the developmental expertise of a pediatrician, the behavioral sophistication of an adult and child psychiatrist, and a deep appreciation of neuroscience, these two books offer an integrated yet comprehensive approach to developmental neuropsychiatry.
Grounded in neuroscience but enriched by clinical realities, Volume II provides a comprehensive review of the developmental neuropsychiatric disorders. Throughout the text current DSM-IV diagnostic criteria are provided. Part I outlines the diagnostic process and the genetic history, provides details on the conduct of neuropsychological testing, and offers a detailed review of brain imaging techniques, moving from CT and MRI scanning to the most recent developments in functional MRI and PET scanning. Part II discusses mental retardation, cerebral palsy, the learning disorders, the pervasive developmental disorders, and traumatic brain injury. Part III describes behavioral phenotypes in cytogenetic and other genetic disorders, genetic metabolic disorders, and disorders that result from gestational substance abuse. Part IV is devoted to developmental psychopathology and includes Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette's disorder, sleep disorders, and the syndromes of aggression and self-injury primarily occurring in mentally retarded persons. Part V covers treatment and includes detailed descriptions of psychotherapy, behavior therapy, pharmacological interventions, genetic counseling, and gene therapy. Finally, Part VI deals with legal and ethical issues as they pertain to developmentally disabled persons.
