But to return: there is one cause of complaint often alleged by Arne ricans against Europeans. You hear it most frequently from our best society,' and it is one of the reasons why they are so often disgusted with Europe. But it applies generally, and is only oftener heard from them because their accidental position brings foreigners in America more into contact with them. The charge is this: that Europeans, after being treated with every possible attention in America, do not reciprocate this treatment to Americans, even their very entertainers, who visit them in Europe.

This want of reciprocity may be as disagreeable to the subjects of it as if it arose from systematic ingratitude or intentional contempt but such is not its real origin. It is attributable to a difference in the man ners and customs of the two hemispheres, want of attention to which often puts people in a false position.
