Between 1895 and 1905 he made detailed nature notes at his cottage by a trout stream near Itchen Abbas in Hampshire. Sir Edward Grey (1862¿1933), 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon, was Home Secretary between 1905 and 1916. In 1914 he said: ¿The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.¿
