Barth demonstrates a firm grasp of the period, and his character sketches of Lewis and Clark and the other members of the Corps of Discovery are exceedingly skillful. His overview of Native American cultures at the turn of the eighteenth century is one of the most impressively even handed treatments of this topic that I have seen."
