H had the experience of many vicifiitudes of fortune in his life; of fome of which he has given an ac count himfelf. His modeliy, and love of retire ment, prevented his appearing often ln the bufy wo1ld; in which his fine parts and genius would have qualified him for acting in a diliinguilhed character. But this is a lofs fufhciently compen fated by his excellent writings; of which that part. Has generally obtained the preference, whereof a new edition,'carefully collated with difi'erent co pies, is now offered to the public.
