The double award GCSE in Applied Science will be available for all 14-19 years olds from September 2002, and will be especially suitable for those looking for a less crowded science curriculum. The "Applied Science Pupil's book" has been written specifically to meet the new specifications, and will be relevant across all awarding bodies. The book is in full colour, and is divided into major sections dealing with the theoretical knowledge required. The approach is to deal with some essential science that is widely used in the workplace, together with basic practical techniques and procedures used in laboratories. The vocational application will be emphasised throughout. The aim is to increase students' interest in science, and improve their understanding of how science is put to use to the benefit of society.

In some respects this book reads like a traditional textbook, with Periodic Table, circulation system, energy, etc., but in other ways it gets into areas where science textbooks don't usually go, such as COSHH regulations, dealing with laboratory accidents, and risk assessments. It gives much more emphasis to how scientists use science. The book is well laid out and has very clear pictures and diagrams. Calculations are clearly set out and explained.
