Upon the publication of a second selection from the essays contributed to the Spectator by my uncle, the late Mr. R. H. Hutton, I have again to acknowledge the great kindness of Mr. Meredith Townsend and Mr. St. Loe Strachey, as well as to thank the Proprietors of the Economist for kindly allowing me to reprint from that journal his article on the death of its late editor, Mr. Walter Bagehot.

As a newspaper article is necessarily very brief, I have thought that it might be more interesting and a greater convenience to the reader if, ignoring the chronological sequence, I placed several of those touching on the same, or similar subjects together.

The essays cover a great number of years, and here and there a little repetition may be noticed, but, in spite of this, it has seemed better to publish them just as they left the hands of Mr. Hutton.
