Buchbeschreibung Original softcover. Zustand: Gut. 4th ed. XVII, 552 p., maps. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Faintly bleached binding due to light exposure, small damages to the back cover, faint staining on the bottom edge, otherwise very good and clean. / Etwas ausgeblichener Einband durch Lichteinwirkung, kleine Beschädigungen am hinteren Buchdeckel, schwache Verschmutzung auf Fußschnitt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - In this volume I have attempted to provide an up-to-date account of the Roman world from earliest times until the Age of the Great Conquests. Political history naturally takes the first place, and while military history of necessity forms a considerable part of the story, I have tried to emphasize the economic and social life of the times, as well as the achievement of the Roman people in the fields of literature, art and religion. The reliability of any history of Rome depends to a considerable extent upon the reliability of the sources. Where the narrative of authoritative ancient historians survives, the margin of error naturally must be limited, but for the history of Rome before the fourth century such a source is lacking, and only legend and tradition fill the gap. The work of modern archaeologists has illumined many dark places, but unfortunately experts do not always agree among themselves. In this present work, in which at times considerations of space may have led to dogmatic statements where dogmatism is neither justified nor desirable, I have adopted a fairly conservative attitude towards the early history of Rome, but at the same time I hope that I have given sufficient indication of the nature of the problems involved and of the reasons of my divergence from those critics whose method is more iconoclastic. Finally, I am very conscious that history means 'enquiry', not certainty. - Professor Scullard's study of Roman history from earliest times to the Age of the Great Conquests has long since established itself as the standard textbook on the subject. Since the publication of the third edition in 1961 a considerable amount of archaeological research has been carried out, and much of interest has come to light, in particular on the earliest phases of the period and on the cultural environment in which the Romans emerged into the light of history. This fourth edition takes account of recent discoveries, and of the reappraisal of older evidence and of literary sources that has inevitably taken place. The chapters on the first beginnings of Rome have been largely rewritten, and the text throughout has been generally revised. An updated bibliography and extended notes at the end of the volume also take account of recent scholarship. ISBN 9780416714906 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 608. Artikel-Nr. 1167029
