While they only know a thing b certain distinct characters, they remain indifferent to it but u sooner are they persuaded that it will afford them pain or plear ure, than it becomes an object of aversion or desire. Supposn for example, that my son has never seen any green grapes 1 winter cherries, and that I have instructed him so clearly i what respects they differ, that he has a correct notion of ihe spl cies of plant to which they belong, I might then say, that he he a just conception of both but would this make him love ti one better than the other 7 No. But place some winter churi and green grapes before him, and he will be instantly attraar to the cherries by their inviting colour. After tasting ha] however, he will learn to distrust appearances, and prefer ti WP.
