In their velvet-lined cases daguerreotypes are precious objects, which no one wants to throw carelessly away. In spite of the fact that many were melted down for their silver, and many others were ruined in bungling attempts to clean their tarnished surfaces, thousands remain in pristine condition, eloquent yet forgotten remembrances of the past. No other pictorial technique was more popular in America in the 1850's: as Horace Greeley said, "In daguerreotypes we beat the world."
