This book is at the same time a presentation and an investigation of the phonological system of the world's most widespread and most widely studied language, English. It is intended both for teachers and prospective teachers of English who require a full understanding of the sound system of English and for students of linguistics who know English and need to acquire an understanding of phonology. Charles W. Kreidler is Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University. He is the co-author of a series of English textbooks and has been involved in the preparation of teachers of English as a second or foreign language in areas as widespread as the USA, Ecuador, Germany, South Africa and Japan.
