The Festival of Britain in 1951 was triumphantly successful at breathing new life into the post-war arts scene. Its guiding spirit was Hugh Casson - energetic, driven, charming - who earned his early Knighthood for his work as the Director of Architecture for this ground-breaking event. He was also Professor of Interior Design at the Royal College of Art, worked closely with the Royal Family, broadcast and wrote on arts subjects, drew and painted, designed opera sets for Glyndebourne and in 1976 became the high profile President of the Royal Academy of Art. A private man, dedicated to public life, Casson was at the forefront of the world of art and architecture for the latter half of the twentieth century.
Biografía del autor:
José Manser is a journalist specialising in design and architecture. She has contributed to many publications including The Times, Guardian and Independent, and was the editor of RIBA Interiors for many years. She has written two previous biographies of designers. Her husband and two children are all architects. She lives in Chiswick, London.
