Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Gut. 313 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag und Einband etwas abgenutzt, sonst gutes Exemplar / Dust jacket and binding somewhat worn, otherwise good copy. - In the tormented history of Italian politics in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Ferrara stands out as one of the first of the city states to opt for despotism as an escape from the freedom of the representative but chaotic communal politics of the late Middle Ages. Werner Gundersheimer's study of the regimes of the four greatest princes of the House of EsteNiccolo III and his three sons, Leonello, Borso, and Ercole Iis the basis for a new theory of Renaissance despotic rule. His model encompasses administrative, social, and economic policies, religious activities, and the role of the Estensi as public figures and patrons of art. The relationship between the Fer- rarese popolo and their Estensi signori rested on a solid foundation of consent. By submitting to despotism the Ferra- rese paid a high price in liberty, representation, and political rights. But in return they got the stability they needed for the tasks of land reclamation, flood control, agricultural production, and urban construction, all of which had particular urgency in their situation. Within the standards of their time and place, all of the Estensi rulers of the fifteenth century sought to improve the lot of the citizens of Ferrara and thereby maintain their own powers and privileges. An unusually thoroughgoing despotism with a substantial and competent bureaucracy was established, producing a stable social order. This secure state was the essential precondition for the extraordinary literary and artistic developments that transformed Ferrara from a dank, strife-ridden, culturally retrograde region into an elegant, peaceful, well-ordered, cosmopolitan cultural center.
