An unusually thoroughgoing despotism with a substantial and competent bureaucracy was established, producing a stable social order. This secure state was the essential precondition for the extraordinary literary and artistic developments that transformed Ferrara from a dank, strife-ridden, culturally retrograde region into an elegant, peaceful, well-ordered, cosmopolitan cultural center.
