Heller House: A Family History

Heller House is a personal memoir by Neil Heller, tracing his family's history from a Jewish shtetl, in what is now Lithuania, to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York during the early 20th Century, to Brooklyn during the Great Depression and World War II, to building homes on Long Island following the War. An excerpt - "The only place I remember living for the first eighteen years of my life was at 763 East 52nd Street in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York. Grandpa Lou first rented the house from the bank that owned it. A lot of houses were foreclosed during the depression and the banks would rent them out. After a short while, he bought it. I can remember the house it like it was yesterday and it is over sixty years ago. It made such a strong impression on me. Your mother lived down the block across the street in a big detached brick house with a large front porch you could sit on. Her brother, Marty, was my best friend. To me, your Mom was just my friend’s kid sister. Little did I know that I would marry her one day."

Neil Heller (born December 24, 1935) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and lives in Great Neck, New York. He is the son of Louis and Ida Heller, brother of William and Dianne, husband of Lois, father of Philip, Marc, Wendy, and David, and grandfather of Morgan and William, and Sofia and Noah.
