Painters, architects and sculptors collaborated as never before to create interiors of unequalled splendour in palaces and churches. At the beginning of the Baroque period came Caravaggio, who brought a new dramatic intensity to painting with his use of sharply contrasted light and shadow, and Anmbale Carracci, whose ceiling in the Farnese Gallery in Rome was studied as ä model by painters for the following two centuries, He and other decorators of genius, such as Pietro da Cortona, Luca Giordano and Baciccio, spread their luminous, triumphal visions over huge vaults, using an illusionist technique whose soaring effects seem to open up the infinity of the heavens. Guido Reni, a painter from Bologna, used colour with great delicacy and treated his subjects with something of a classical restraint. Not all Italian Baroque painting was devoted to religious subjects or grandiose mythological schemes; a widening interest in art among private patrons led to the exploration of the new subjects of still-life, landscape and genre, while in Florence aspects of the macabre and the bizarre came to the fore.
