Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Sehr gut. 79 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. Eine Ecke der inneren Umschlagklappe fehlt. - An evening in Paris in the 1880s and 90s, when Lautrec made this nightlife the main focus of his work, might take several surprising turns. From the elaborate preparations of the woman of fashion's toilette, to the smoky atmosphere of a bustling café, those fortunate enough to attend a ball at the Opéra would make an almost comic contrast with the habitués of popular dance-halls like the Moulin de la Galette or the more commercialised Moulin Rouge. The formality of the theatre, whether some avant-garde production by Antoine, or the traditionalism of the Comédie Française, would similarly have drawn different types of spectators than tuneful operettas like Hervé's Chilpéric, which so delighted Lautrec. The acrobatics of the circus clowns and riders was as skilled as the razor-sharp diction of the great cabaret stars, capable of silencing a hall without the inhibition of a microphone. The bistrot, the elegant private supper-rooms, the late-night bars where performers and artists met on mutual territory attracted his eye as well as his private world, behind the drawn curtains and soft-shades of the luxurious brothels. While the revellers continued in their dance and flirtations until dawn lit the sky, the early morning workers, the laundresses and market porters would already be on their feet.
