Manette Ansay ("Ann") grew up in a small Midwestern town, brought up in the Catholic faith and passionate about the piano. By the time Ann is accepted into the prestigious Carnegie college however, not only is her religious faith taking a knock, but the pains in her arms and legs are worsening, and becoming resistant to the treatments she had been using (such as ice baths for her wrists after heavy practice sessions). At Carnegie the unwritten motto is "no pain, no gain", and injury is expected and expected not to interfere with the gruelling practice schedules. In this memoir, Ann writes about her paralysing illness and how it shaped her life as a writer.
