Buchbeschreibung Original hardcover. Zustand: Gut. 192 p., w/ tables and pictures. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Very minimally scuffed spine. Otherwise in perfect condition. - Content: There are many works of textual and historical scholarship which deal with Aristophanes. This book attempts a different task: to examine the plays from the point of view of a dramatic critic, and to try to discover, as closely as possible, what their effect may have been on the original audience. The book was written with the general reader in mind, and in particular for those students of theatre who are not classical scholars, but who wish to study the unique phenomenon of Greek Old Comedy in some detail, and to relate its performing traditions to comedy of later ages and styles. For this reason, I have tended throughout to assume a larger familiarity with Aristophanes own work than with the literature of classical criticism, and I have avoided controversy wherever possible. All extracts from the plays are given in translation. I am grateful to Cambridge University Press for permission to quote from my own translation of Knights', to Penguin Books Ltd for permission to quote from David Barrett s translations of Wasps, Women at the Festival and Frogs', and to The University of Michigan Press and New English Library Ltd for permission to quote from William Arrowsmith s translation of Birds, and from Douglass Parker s translations of Achamians and Assemblywomen. (Where no satisfactory translation has been published, I have used plain versions of my own.) Line references throughout the book are to the Greek text of Hall and Geldart (Oxford, second edition 1906-1907). In between more general opening and closing chapters, the book is divided into three sections, which cover respectively the circumstances within which Aristophanes worked, some aesthetic matters unique in or crucial to his plays, and a discussion of the creative role played by the actors as they performed the scripts. Except in Chapters 2 4, which contain in part a summary of essential general information, I have tried not to duplicate the content of other books on Aristophanes. The books listed in the bibliography are likely to be of most use to the non-specialist seeking the current state of our knowledge. My thanks are due first to my father, Professor John McLeish, for help and advice at the start of the project; to Sir Kenneth Dover, who kept a friendly eye on the book from the beginning, and who saved me from much error; to William Arrowsmith, Frederic Raphael, Eric Southern and Walter Stein, who read the manuscript in draft and provided useful criticism; and above all to my wife, Valerie McLeish, for help and encouragement throughout and for indexing the book. It is a pleasure to acknowledge my debts, and my duty to state that faults remaining in the book are the result of my own intransigence rather than of the advice of my friends.
