Críticas:
"Gardner proves a sensitive, acute reader of one of the two greatest English poets. . . . Gardner makes the arresting proposal that Chaucer was experimenting, far ahead of his time, with such mod-ern concepts as the 'unreliable narrator' and 'the art of, so to speak, bad art.' Crudely summarized, this must sound overingenious. But the energy, enthusiasm and complexity of Gardner's argument stirs one to read Chaucer afresh."--Walter Clemons, "Newsweek" "Gardner puts Chaucer's comic genius, gentle humanism and psychological insights into a new perspective. Synthe-sizing for the serious reader the past two decades of Chaucer studies, his book serves as an introduction to Chaucer's 'magnificent, puzzling, delightful world.'"--"Publishers"' "Weekly" Gardner proves a sensitive, acute reader of one of the two greatest English poets. . . . Reseña del editor:
"The Poetry of Chaucer "offers a reading of his poetry harmonious with the character of Chaucer as his own age knew and understood him. This new work by John Gardner is designed to complement his biography of Chaucer being published by Alfred A. Knopf."""The Poetry of Chaucer "is not simply one more sensitive reading of the poet s work, nor is it, simply, a modern writer s comment on the work of one of his two greatest English predecessors. Gardner s reading of the poetry of Chaucer provides a persuasive synthesis of virtually the whole body of scholarly work done on Chaucer in the past twenty yearsthe period of the critical revolution in Chaucerian studies. It may well be considered, for years to come, the definitive statement on how and why Chaucer wrote verse. One purpose of Gardner s "The Poetry of Chaucer "is to make the new evidence available to the nonspecialist. But Gardner s larger purpose is to show how the various kinds of new evidence fit together, to demonstrate how, for the reader willing to look down from the mountaintop, " "seemingly conflicting readings of Chaucer s poetry can be recognized as parts of a harmonious whole. Gathering and assessing the results of the past twenty years of Chaucer studies, adding striking new evidence derived from his own close analysis of Chaucer s poetry, and for the first time emphasizing the importance, throughout Chaucer s work, of the most significant philosophical movement of Chaucer s age, so-called Nominalism, Gardner creates a coherent image of Chaucer and Chaucer s art."

Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First edition. Fine in near fine dustwrapper with some rubbing and crinkling to spine. Warmly inscribed by the author to Nicholas Delbanco and his wife: "To Nick and Elena with love and thanks for many many things. John Gardner." Gardner and acclaimed novelist and critic Delbanco first forged a friendship when Delbanco hosted Gardner during a reading tour at Bennington College in 1974. Delbanco ended up hiring Gardner for the English Department at the College. They and their families began a close professional and personal relationship in which each of the authors strove to critique the other's works in private and promote them in public, Gardner touting Delbanco as "one of the country's best novelists." Each acknowledged the contribution of the other in developing both their theories of literature and for specific elements of their respective works, whether it be Delbanco using Gardner's title *Stillness* for one of his novels or Gardner using Delbanco's writing to help clarify the husband-wife relationship in one of his own works. Delbanco's home and family became a refuge for both Gardner and his first wife during their messy divorce. Following Gardner's death in a 1982 motorcycle accident, Delbanco became Gardner's literary executor; editing and contributing an introduction to Gardner's posthumously published *Stillness and Shadows*. Delbanco's daughter Francesca, who was an occasional babysitter of Gardner's children, and who has herself published two well-received novels, *Ask Me Anything* and *Midnight in Manhattan* was the Dedicatee of one of Gardner's acclaimed children's books, *The King of Hummingbirds*. A significant association copy of a scarce title. Artikel-Nr. 110442
