Buchbeschreibung Half Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. 347 p.: Ill. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, leichte Randläsuren, Kopfschnitt angegraut, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz, sonst guter Zustand / dust jacket rubbed, slight edge wear, top edge grayed, pencil annotation on endpaper, otherwise good condition. - Cicero was the greatest of Roman orators. Gifted with an exceptional command of language, he was only in his twenties when he won his reputation in the courts of Rome, and the speeches he gave there brought him his deserved laurels as the greatest rhetorician of all time. Born in 106 B.C., Marcus Tullius Cicero followed the traditional practice of publishing his speeches, but also produced a large number of works on the theory and practice of rhetoric, on religion, and on moral and political philosophy. While fully aware of the guilt of many of his illustrious clients, Cicero explicitly justified their defense on the grounds of compassion and human decency, and cited the injustice of denying assistance to any man confronted by all the forces of organized society. His unspoken motive was, of course, the advance to his own career which would occur should the case be successful and public sentiment side with the defense. The most famous speeches in The Murder Trials include Cicero s defenses of: Sextus Roseius, accused of murdering his wealthy father during the dictatorship of Sylla. The accusation was brought by a co-conspirator with the actual murderers, who had seized possession of his father s estate and did not wish to cede it under new government. Gaius Rabirius, accused of killing the tribune Saturnius nearly thirty years beforehand. The accusation had been instigated at the request of Caesar, and Rabirius appealed from the sentence of death which Caesar had pronounced against him. Deiotarus, King of Galatia, who sided with Pompey during the civil wars. Following his victory, Caesar stripped him of everything but his title, and Deiotarus own grandson then accused him of attempting to murder Caesar. The Murder Trials gives a wealth of detail about Roman law, life and history, and a graphic picture of the gun-laws in the small provincial towns of that time. Cicero s firsthand account of social and political life in the upper classes of Rome also reflects the changing personal feelings of an emotional and sensitive man. As a statesman, his ideals were more honorable than those of his contemporaries. It is not surprising, therefore, that much of his reasoning may be found in the British legal system today. / CONTENTS Introduction I. In Defence of Sextus Roscius of Ameria 1.
