Bibliography. - Introduction: Scholars have offered many interpretations of Thucydides' meaning, ranging from conclusions censuring his misrepresentation and asserting that the speeches are purely literary compositions to the defenses of those who believe the speeches stand approximately as they were originally delivered. Neither extreme has been generally accepted as adequate. Thucydides' passion for clarity and accuracy has impressed readers too deeply to allow many to believe that he would deliberately falsify. The inclusion of certain speeches which have more than one speaker, on the other hand, suggests that Thucydides sometimes combined the central ideas of several different speeches in a single speech. It seems reasonable to believe with Finley that the speeches of Thucydides are more compressed than their originals. Most scholars would agree that their language and style are Thucydides' own, even though he may include occasional phrases and linguistic characteristics of the original speakers. It has been shown that even the style would not be uncommon for the statesmen of this period. The most significant fact, however, that throws doubt on the assumption that the speeches represent real speeches spoken at the time and by persons whom Thucydides names is the frequency of correspondences among them. The unity of the History surely could not have been achieved by including over fifty real speeches without modifying their content and organization to fit the plan of the whole.
