Not illustrated. 1798 Excerpt: ...and clearest reasoning, might, upon such an occasion, instead of incurring Ridicule, have exhibited to aftertimes, a bright pattern indeed of a prosecution against an innovating member in dangerous contingencies! and by conducting it upon terms legally strenuous yet academically liberal, have established In A Masterly Manner, a most conspicuous precedent, which had, answered their present purposes, and, made the future enterprizer in similar attemps tremble ere he dared to execute. Mr. Frend having been found to have offended against the statute de concionibus, and having refused to retract and confess his error and temerity, incurred the penalty of the statute, and was banished the University on the 30th day of May, 1793. Upon this Mr. Frend appealed to a Court of Delegates, consisting of Sir William Wynne, Dr. Hey, Dr. Seale, Mr. E. Christian, and Mr. Lane, who, after a trial of four days, affirmed the former sentence on the 29th day of June following. Mr. Frend throughout his trial manifested considerable spirit and ability. His Defence in "the Vice-Chancellor's Court displayed much flow of language and acuteness of remark, but certainly ' '-was was not such a defence as he should have made m/uch a cause. The Vice-Chancellor's excellent Speech upon this occasion has been already noticed under the name Beverley. Previous to this unfortu. nate pamphlet, which caused so great a ferment in the University, Mr. Frend had published " Thoughts on Subscription:" " An Address to Trinitarians:" and, an Appendix to his Thoughts on Subscription. Since his banishment from the University he has published, beside an Account of his Trial, and a Sequel to that account: a System of Algebia, in which the elementary rules and operations are explained...
