God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved tis, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, by grace are ye saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. It is a great truth in divine as well as human knowledge, that no subject can be adequately understood, unless it be viewed not only as it is in itself, but also as it is in relation to the system of which it forms a part. And yet, obvious as this truth is, it has frequently been lost sight of, when the peculiar doctrines of the Gospel--the doctrines which relate more immediately to the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards man--have been under consideration. Such subjects as the Incarnation of our blessed Lord, the Sacraments, Regeneration, Justification, Sanctification, Good Works, and others, have too often been viewed if not altogether as insulated and detached points, yet without sufficient reference to that great and central truth, the union between Christ and his people, with which they are all so intimately connected. Much evil has resulted from this oversight: low and inadequate views of divine truth generally, confusion of doctrines essentially distinct, separation of doctrines in their nature inseparable, the undue exaltation of some points, the undue depreciation of others.
