The footpaths and tracks referred to in this chapter are clearly shown in the map drawn by the Author. P)UNSTABLE is justly famous for its beautiful, grassy hills, or downs, three in number--(i) The Hills Dunstable Downs, on the south-west; (2) Totternhoe Hill, on the west; and (3) Blows Downs, on the east. The hills range in height from 525 feet to 800 feet above the sea-level. To reach Totternhoe Hill, West Street must be traversed to the " Rifle Volunteer" inn at Toty.'1nhoe its western termination--three-quarters of a-mile. The cemetery is passed on the left. On reaching the " Rifle Volunteer" the Icknield Way will be seen to continue on the border of the downs for a long distance on the left. Two other roads start from this point, the one to the left leads to Kensworth and Whipsnade, the one to the right, is the Green Way or Drover's Way, which leads to the top of Totternhoe Hill. If, instead of turning at once to the right, a few steps are taken along the Icknield Way a second road to the right will be seen, this leads to the ancient village of Totternhoe. Before we start on a walk to Totternhoe Hill we should remember that the crossing of the roads near the "Rifle Volunteer" is one of the most ancient crossings of any great roads of England.
