Not illustrated. 1881 Excerpt: ...picturesque grounds in the kingdom. The name is derived from the late proprietor, Jeremiah Rosher, Esq. The family of this gentleman founded and endowed a handsome church at Rosherville, in the Transition style of architecture. It is remarkable for the beauty of the stone carving, with which it is highly decorated. There in a richly-stained glass chancel window, and also two other memorial windows at the east end of each aisle. Northfleet has an extensive dockyard for shipbuilding, which affords employment to hundreds of the surrounding population. The north-west marsh was formerly covered by the Thames, but is now protected by high flood-gates. There are some good residences in this neighbourhood; among them are Wombwell Hall, Oldbury Cottage, Brook Vale, New House, ifec. Perry Street is a populous district, about a mile south of the church, chiefly of new houses. Crossing the cemetery at Northfleet, and proceeding some distance, a turn on the left conducts to Springhead, a favourite resort of Gravesead visitors, and celebrated for its water-cress plantations, nourished by a stream which meanders along some quarter of a mile of fruit and flower garden-ground. At this spot visitors congregate in large numbers during the summer months, not only for the purchase of water-cresses, but to feast on strawberries and other dainties. From hence, a walk may agreeably be extended to Southfleot, which is only a quarter of a mile distant, and is a part, too, of this same rich cultivated valley, which in ancient times slept beneath the waters of the Thames. Halting beneath a huge walnut tree that overhangs the village school, we read above the antiquated porch the inscription--" This school was founded by the piety of Sir John Sedley, Bart, A.d. 1637; augmented by ...
