At all times the power of the Papal Church was exercised for the enlargement of territory beyond its limits, as well as for the maintenance of authority within them; and zealous efforts were continually made, sometimes with boasted success, oftener with marked failure, to proselyte the members of other churches, existing in the eastern parts of Europe, and in the contiguous regions of Asia and Africa.
