Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. BOTH Sheldon and Bessie were in the highest spirits when they arrived home. Notwithstanding that she had not accepted him, Sheldon magnified their mutual understanding, their good fellowship, and the hope she had given him until he felt that they practically belonged to each other. Perhaps she felt a little the same way: for as he helped her from the sleigh his pressure of the hand was returned. It was not yet time for dinner; so at his suggestion they walked to the front of the house and stood gazing out over the river. The mountains on the opposite shore cast deep shadows at their base, so that even outlines of objects were indistinguishable. Sheldon drew Bessie's hand through his arm. "Don't think me foolish or sentimental, dear, if I tell you what my thoughts are just now. Those shadows over there--well, I feel as though I had been living in just such shadows, and perhaps not even trying to grope my way out. But now the moon is rising at last! I can't see it from over there; but after a time all will be light. I am superstitious about some things; and the moon rising over there, on this night of all others, seems to promise me more than you yourself will promise. You are very precious to me, Bessie--nothing can alter that fact?" He drew her arm closer within his, and he thought she gave a little low laugh of pleasure; but she only said it was time to go in. They entered the house looking very happy, and met Blake at the door. He regarded them with a very comical expression, shut one eye and whistled, then walked in to dinner. Sheldon was, to say the least, a little surprised, but paid no attention to him. Both Bessie and Sheldon were very lively at dinner that evening, though they did not talk especially to each other.
