Sophy have become popular, must be indeed gratifying to every lover of his race. And in the more sublime de partments of Physical Science the same progress is visible. Geology is contributing the details of the past history of thefplanet on which we live. The telescope is making magnificent disclosures of the distant regions of the material creation. Excerpt from Essays in Philosophy
The following "Essays in Philosophy" were originally contributed to the North British Review, in the period extending from 1846 to 1855. They are now collected and republished, with a few slight alterations, chiefly in order to afford ready access to the evidence they may furnish, in support of the author's application for the Chair of Logic and Metaphysics in the University of Edinburgh, left vacant by the death of Sir William Hamilton.
In this point of view, these Essays are relevant, principally as manifesting the general tendency of the writer's opinions, in regard to Logical and Metaphysical questions that are prominent in the discussions of the Nineteenth Century, and especially in the works of the distinguished philosopher who recently adorned the Metropolitan University of Scotland.
