Capital letters and punctuation are taught incidentally, in connection with language-study as it progresses.

In the preparation of this book, which is based upon Welsh's First Lessons in English, the aim has been to make a text-book well adapted to use in all intermediate and lower grammar grades of city, town, and village schools, and for the ungraded country schools.
It is pre-eminently a book to develop the thinking powers of the learner. The general plan of the work is to enable the pupil to gain a mastery of the language through its use. Facts are adduced and amply illustrated before principles are stated; ideas are developed before the terms are given. The child is made to perceive before he is asked to remember, and to reason before he is required to generalize.
Starting with a thought as the unit of expression, the pupil is made familiar with the form and structure of the sentence, its subject, and its predicate; with oral and pictorial analysis; with the offices of the noun, the pronoun, the adjective, the verb, the adverb, the preposition, the conjunction, the interjection; with the subdivisions of the parts of speech; with the processes of inflection; with the laws of construction; with capitalization and punctuation; and, finally, with the art of letter-writing and composition. One topic only is presented at a time.
