The action of our tale has necessarily been so closely compressed within such a very short period - not more than about ten days - that we have so far been able to notice the most remarkable of the particulars crowded into each day as it passed. For the future, however, as the narrative extends over months and years, we must pass over with a general statement circumstances which do not immediately involve the persons in whom the reader is the most interested.
