ON the appearance of a new edition of these col lected works, at so late a period of his long and desultory course, the Author feels himself justified in giving more publicity than would formerly have been expedient to some of those peculiar circum stances, which, having governed his choice of sub jects, and influenced his manner of handling them in his earlier compositions, have continued more or less to determine the character and tone of the whole.
