My Countrymen,

If you will give a patient attention to this address, you will find in it, I trust, those truths and that moderation which have ever been valuable to Englishmen, and which, if they have ever been necessary to them, are peculiarly necessary now.

I do not promise to entertain you with novelties, but t will endeavour to lead you into a recurrence towards those antient principles which were once thought worthy of the admiration and the support of your ancestors; for which they did not hesitate to plead with firmness, to fight with bravery, and to die with fortitude; which ought to be as dear to you, who must know with what diligence they were acquired, and with what care they have been preserved for you; and which you ought not to sacrifice to the novel dogmas of innovating doctrines.
