But upon examining the work of Dr. Goold, after the index was finished, the editor found evidence that the same object had been kept in view, and that in quite a number of cases the phraseology most recently adopted did not vary from that already used. In other respects, the accuracy, minuteness, and carefulness of the indices furnished with the foreign edition were so conspicuous that the editor felt it to be a waste of treasure to omit the effective labors of his most industrious predecessor. Hence, the new index was also combined with those of Dr. Goold, and thus the whole is believed to be complete and exhaustive. By a judicious use of italics distributed over the pages, and by the agreement of such italicized words with the topics referred to in the index, great facility is afforded for discovering the views and opinions of the author in regard to any matter upon which information is sought.
In the index of Texts of Scripture to which reference in any way has been made in the writings of Owen, the reader will observe a change which is believed to be peculiar to the present edition. That is the arrangement of the books of the Old and New Testaments in alphabetical form. While the familiarity of Bible readers with the names and order of the sacred books is presumed and to be taken for granted, yet it is thought that the placing of each book under its proper letter, and in the order of the alphabet, is not without advantages bearing upon the readiness and promptness with which it is usually necessary to refer to any handling of a passage of Scripture, a knowledge of which is desirable.
