Excerpt from Life of William Wilberforce
The 'Life of Wilberforce' was published in the year 1838, in five volumes; to which were afterwards added, in 1840, two volumes of 'Correspondence.' The sale within a few years of 7,500 copies bore testimony to the interest which it excited. It has been for some years out of print. The time seems, therefore, to have come for preparing a wholly revised edition of the work. Such is this volume: partly rewritten; corrected in some important points where blemishes had been detected; with some additions from the volumes of correspondence and other sources; whilst it has been so condensed as, without omitting anything essential to the narrative, to be compressed into a single volume. This has been effected mainly by a careful excision of all repetitions; especially of those connected with that inner life of personal religion which, after the great change which passed upon him, was the mainspring of all Mr. Wilberforce's exertions for others. It has seemed enough to show distinctly, and that more than once, these interior works of the great machine, without perpetually returning to their exhibition.
