Excerpt from The Construction of Roads, Paths, and Sea Defences: With Portions Relating to Private Street Repairs, Specification Clauses, Prices for Estimating,& Engineer's Replies to Queries
Seeing the great advances that have been made in recent years in all branches of road construction and the many engineering works connected therewith, and being aware of the increasing demand for additional and improved roads, which must be regarded as a first necessity for the welfare and comfort of every civilised and developing country, the author penned in his spare moments (with the assistance of many leading engineers, to whom he is much indebted for valuable data), a lengthy series of articles for the columns of the Sanitary Record and Journal of Municipal Engineering, with the desire of producing in an interesting form a useful record of the more modern methods of construction, materials, and maintenance, adopted in roads and paths, in the hope that they would be read from week to week as they were published, and that some amount of benefit to the public would result therefrom.
