My Lord,

When I first sat down to translate the Hebrew Scriptures, I knew I was undertaking a most arduous task; but, I confess, I was not sufficiently aware of all the difficulties that have since occurred. If I had, I should then, perhaps, have prudently declined an enterprize, which I cannot, without pusillanimity, now relinquish.

However, as new obstacles are daily presenting themselves, and doubts and perplexities seem to multiply in proportion as I proceed, I have reduced a part of these into a set of Queries, which I beg leave to lay before your Lordship, as the person in the kingdom the most likely to give me a satisfactory solution of them.
