Maps and Atlases (Part 6) lists domestic and foreign maps, atlases, and other cartographic works registered in Class F and also similar works registered in other classes. The registrations in other classes are also listed in that part of the Catalog which covers the respective class. Part 6 includes in a separate section renewal registrations of works originally registered in Class F. Each registration is described in a main entry and cross-references are provided to facilitate the location of the main entries.

Part 6 consists of four sections: 1) an alphabetical list of main entries for works currently registered, arranged under the names appearing at the beginning of the entries (interfiled with the main entries are cross-reference entries beginning with other names for which a searcher might look; in each case, the cross-reference refers the searcher to the name under which the main entry can be found); 2) an index of areas and subjects, in which each registration is listed under a heading descriptive of the subject - geographical area or type, i. e., atlas, globe, etc.; 3) an alphabetical list of main entries for renewal registrations together with cross-references; and 4) a publishers' directory, which is an alphabetical list of the publishers of the works described in the first section, together with the latest address for each as given in the applications or the copies.

Each main entry is listed under the name of the person or corporate body principally responsible for the content of the work, otherwise known as the "authority." For currently registered works, cross-references are made for distinctive titles and for the names of claimants, editors, compilers, joint authors, draftsmen, and publishers; for renewal registrations cross-references are made for titles and for essential names given in the main entries. Cross-references are also made for variant forms of names.

The area headings used in the second section consist of the largest geographical or political units enclosed within the borders of the several maps. When the borders of a map do not coincide in any way with a single geographical or political unit, the name of the most significant unit contained therein is used in the heading. When the map contains three or more States comprising part of one of the major geographical divisions of the United States, one of the following headings is used: Atlantic Seaboard; Gulf States; Middle States; Mountain States; New England States; North Central States, east; North Central States, west; Pacific States; South Atlantic States; South Central States, east; and South Central States, west. If the area shown on the map does not coincide with any of the fare going 11 designations, one of the following sub divisions under "United States" is used: northern, northeastern, eastern, southeastern, southern, central, northwestern, western, or southwestern. Names of rivers, lakes, and other geographical features are used when necessary.

Each main entry for currently registered works includes, in addition to the name used as the heading, the following information descriptive of the work, if available and applicable:

1) Title.
2) Edition statement, together with information relating to previous publication.
3) Imprint, consisting of place of publication and name of publisher when these are given in the copy of the work.
4) Size, series, and scale (scale is given as a representative fraction, if it can be ascertained, and followed by the linear scale as it appears on the map), or, in the case of atlases and other books, pagination and illustration statement.
5) Descriptive notes.
6) Names of authors given in the application which do not appear elsewhere in the entry.
7) Name of the employer in the case of a work made for hire, if so named in the application, together with the names of the employees.
