The wonderful increase of machinery, of all kinds, that has taken place in England during the last thirty years, having been mainly produced by those improvements made on the Steam Engine which led to its general introduction as a first mover, has conferred great interest and importance on every circumstance connected with the construction and history of that magnificent mechanism.
Several treatises of great merit, describing particular engines, have been long before the public; but in none of them has the general history of improvement formed any part of the plan of their authors.
With the view of supplying this want, the following compilation was undertaken.
