Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Vol. 4: For the Year 1838
The Royal Observatory at Edinburgh is situate on the Calton Hill, in the north-eastern quarter of the city, in Latitude 55° 57 North, and Longitude 0 12m 4350 of time, or 3° 10' 45 of space, West Of the meridian of Greenwich. The upper surface of the square plinth of the base of the central column, bearing the Equatorial Telescope, is 34916 feet above the mean level of the sea in the Frith of Forth at Leith.
The Observatory, and the principal instruments, viz. The Transit Instrument, Mural Circle, Equatorial Telescope, and Clock, are particularly described in the preceding Volumes.
