Reseña del editor:
Excerpt from Die Schriften Des Waldschulmeisters
Winkelsteg, the spot around which the events related cluster, is a hamlet founded and organized through the efforts and toil of the old master. The sparse popala tion, reclaimed by his efforts, is made up of poachers, deserters from the flag, and vagabonds generally. He had been the guide and inspiration of the settlement his influence or, perhaps better, his recognition of the better innate qualities of his scattered charge, proved a leaven or quickening impulse to higher things.
The sketches of the Waldschulmeister breathe such a fragrance of forest and mountain, and are otherwise so characteristic of the life around our author, that the reader gains an insight into that life scarcely second in vividness and clearness to that obtained by personal contact. Rosegger, we feel, is continually fashioning material with which his innermost being is one. He makes us observe and appreciate nature with him; he makes us breathe the mountain air and hear the yodel of the Alpine herder; see the budding flower and the sparkle of the hillside brook and forest stream. Thou hast heard, he says, of the river Lethe of the Greeks. L'was a peculiar stream; whoso drank thereof forgot the past. The wavelets of the forest-brook are still more marvellous whoever rocks himself thereon, though he have winter in his locks, finds again his long past child hood days and his youth.
