L'art romain du 1 r siecle, a l'imitation de l'art alexandrin. A souvent represente les Provinces vaincues. A l'epoque des Severes, les souvenirs de la conquete de la Gaule sont deja loin. La Gaule d'alors appartient l'empire non Seulement par le droit du glaive, mais surtout par la fidelite de ses habitants. C'est, de toutes les provinces, la plus riche, cille ou l'on tra vaille le mieux. Aussi n'est-elle pas figuree comme une captive attristee; c'est une forte femme, a l'attitude assuree, au regard hardi, couronnee de tours comme vele, ou comme cette belle tete de bronze, personnification probable de Lutece, qui a ete decouverte au xvne siecle a Paris 3.
