The Congrefs accordingly de termined not to lofe the prefent favourable opportunity, wh1le the Britilh arms were weak and cooped up in Bolton, for attempting the reduction of that province. The Generals Schuyler and Montgo mery, with two re iments of New York militia, a 0d of New England men, and ihme others, amounting in the whole to near 3000 men, were appointed to this fervice. A number of batteaux, or hat boats, were built at Ticonde roga and crown-point, to convey the forces along Lake Champlain to the river Sorel, which forms the' entrance into Canada, and is com pofed of the fur lus waters of the akes, which it ifcharges in river St. Lawrence, and wm ford a happy communicatit tween both, were it not foz rapids that obliruét the navi.

The Congrefs were alib fcnfible, that they had already gone fuch lengths as could onl be jultified by arms. The fword' was already drawn, and the appeal made. It was too late now to look hack,and to waver would be certain deflate tion. Ifa certain degree of fuccefs did not afford a fanétion to their refillance, and difpofe the court of great-britain to an accommoda tioh upon lenient terms, they would not only lofe thofe immuni ties for which they at prefent con tended, but all others would lie at the mercy of J. Jealous and irritated government. In fuch a date, their moderation in the frugle inflance of Canada, they thought, would be a poor plea for compaflion or indulgence.
