To this remark, founded on truth, we could have wifhed Mr. C. Had added the reatou wh Homer contrived to be minute without being tedious, to appear fini cd without growing languid, to accumulate details without lohng the whole; defects which have invariably ar tended the defcriptiuns of his finifhed followers, from Virgil and Apol lonius, down to Ariollo, and from him to the ts of our days, Milton alone excepted. It is, becaufe he never ulfered the defcrip tions that branched out of his fuhjefl to become too heavy for the trunk that fupported them; becaufe he never admitted any image calculated to reflect more honour on his knowledge than on his judg ment becaufe he did not feelt but find, 'not ferve but rule detail, abforbed by his' great end; and chiefly becaufe he, and he alone, cou trived to create the image he deferibed, limb by limb, part by part, before our eyes, connecting it with his plot, and making it the OE fpring of aé'tton and time, the two great mediums of poetry.
