The an 011 the eafi fide of this county is wholefome and agreeable, but on the weft, in the Peak, it is much fharpcr and more variable. The foil of the E. And S. Parts, which are full of gentlemen's feats and parks, are wellculeivated and fruitful. The Weft part, on the other fide the Derwent, is barren in general, {ome few vales ex cepted. 'at the bottom offeveral mountains are large cavities, called by the inhabi tants, fwallows, becaufe many fireams run into them without any vifible vent. There are chalybeat fprings at Kedlefion near Derby, near Matlock, and fome at Stanley and Quarendori near Derby.

AT the dilfolution it was valued at 3741. 108. 6d. Ob. Per an num, according to Dugdale. Speed fays, 3811. 108. 6d. Ob. The fite was granted 23 Henry VIII. To Richard Pollard. It was long in the poffeflion of a branch in the family of Prideaux from whence it came, by marriage, to F. Gwyn, of Glamorgan, Efq; in whofe family it {till remains. It is converted into a dwelling-houfe; and, although it has doubtlefs undergone many alterations and repairs, thefe having been made in the {tile of the original building; f0 that it appears to be quite entire, and is a handfome and venerable Gothic firué'ture.
