If we were to judge of the author's real fentimeuts by fuch palfages as thefe, we might be apt to think, that though he was not certain Of the immortality Of the foul, and a future flate, yet hawas much inclined to favour that doé'trine as not only ufe tul, but probable too. But there are other paffages by which it appears, that notwithllanding thefe fair profeflions, he did not really acknowlege or believe that doétrine himfelf, and as far as his reafoning or authority could go, has endeavoured to weaken, if not dellroy, the belief of it in the minds of Others too.
