Excerpt from Round About Armenia: The Record of a Journey Across the Balkans Through Turkey, the Caucasus, and Persia in 1895
We are going through a critical period in our history, for there is a general tendency among the Powers to hustle us at every turn, whether with the object of forcing us to join one or the other of the opposing camps of European politics, as some suppose, or simply with the view to weakening us, as I think more probable, does not signify. I believe that, if we do not actively intervene in Turkey, we shall presently find the diplomatical chess-board so disposed. That we shall be at a great disadvantage. The examples of Siam, China, and Madagascar are not alarming, but they are significant.

In this record I have laboured rather to explain the causes which have brought about the present state of affairs in Asia Minor, than to excite the passions of the reader by a recital of the repulsive details of cruelty which attended the massacres. Those details are unfit for publication, and, in my Opinion, unless it is possible to publish a full and exhaustive body of evidence, it is better to limit the statement to general terms. Besides, the Blue Books have already made accessible to the public a sufficiently blood-curdling series of authentic atrocities.
