Provides an approach to learning about and dealing with ethical dilemmas in the health care profession. The dilemmas included in this text are based upon real events and cover a broad range of categories such as billing, documentation, paediatric issues, psychiatric setting, fieldwork, home health care, managed care, long-term care and more. The book consists primarily of exercises that are based on events which address up-to-date health care issues. The first chapter takes a look at why ethical dilemmas seem so prevalent today, as well as looking at the changing face of rehabilitation practice. The authors look at where our sense of ethics is developed, how ethics are recognized, strategies on addressing dilemmas, and methods for analyzing them. Features include: a checklist of the most common legal issues occupational therapists face in practice that can be confused with an ethical problem; AOTA Code of Ethics; samples of relevant laws; relevant Medicare regulations; and sample licensure laws.
