Críticas:
Christenson has offered readers a useful and informative edition of four Plautine plays in neutral, accessible English that, unlike some recent Plautus translations, reaches out to a wide modern audience, both classicist and general, both in Anglophone countries and elsewhere in the world. Within the range of Plautus translations as currently available, this is certainly a most welcome contribution. Christenson's thematical focus on some of Plautus' more serious plays, in which he seems almost like a social critic, is interesting and provides food for thought.

- Vincent Hunink, Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2009.07.03

Reseña del editor:
This anthology contains English translations of four plays by one of the best practitioners of Roman comedy, Plautus. The plays Casina, Amphitryon, Captivi and Pseudolus provide an introduction to the world of Roman comedy. As with all Focus translations, the emphasis is on a handsomely produced, inexpensive, readable edition that is close to the original, with an extensive introduction, notes and appendices.

Buchbeschreibung Broschiert / Paperback. Zustand: Gut. V, 265 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Introduction -- Plautine theater must have been a lively spectacle. A cross-section of a stratified and status-conscious society - upper and lower ranks, women and men, young and old, free and slave, rich and poor, Roman, Italian and other - flocked into open-air, temporary theaters that were constructed solely for this spectacle and then dismantled. The occasions for theatrical performances in Rome were religious festivals held in honor of a god, which might also feature gladiator contests, chariot races, and various other entertainments. The competition for an audience thus was stiff, but Plautus seems to have been a very successful comic playwright; though Plautus himself was probably of low status, and not a Roman, the comedies of this "outsider" managed to capture the imagination of the diverse and predominantly Roman crowd at the festivals. A large part of Plautus success probably was due to the broad nature of his humor and the sheer delight of the playful and punning Latin his characters speak. But the rich social fabric of the plays no doubt also accounts for their appeal in the Rome of Plautus day - and perhaps also for the survival of twenty-one Plautine scripts through continuous copying by hand down to the Renaissance, when they were first published in book form, as they continue to be today, in Latin editions and in translations such as this volume. Just what has made Plautine theater so engaging to so many different types of people, in both the ancient and modern worlds? ISBN 9781585101559 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 360.
