Praise for the Clovis Crawfish Series:
"In Louisiana's bayou country, Clovis Crawfish is a favorite folk hero of children who have met him in Fontenot's lively tales. . . . The stories have suspense, lessons in nature lore, French words, and plenty of fun."
-Publishers Weekly
"Mary Alice Fontenot's Clovis Crawfish Series have been providing lessons both in nature lore and French words and phrases used in everyday Cajun conversation as well as stories that are simply fun to read."
-Houston Post
Clovis Crawfish and His Friends is the book that launched the entire Clovis Crawfish Series and introduced this friendly crawfish to children and adults alike. Since he first appeared in 1962, Clovis Crawfish has taught children in Louisiana and across the country important concepts such as friendship, teamwork, and problem solving. Through the adventures of Clovis and his friends, children also learn about the ecology of the bayou. Each story includes French words and phrases heard in everyday Cajun conversation.
Clovis lives in a mud house in Bayou Frog Tail, which strikes him as a strange name, since frogs don't even have tails. Bertile Butterfly is no help in explaining this mystery to him-all she wants to do is flit about and eat flowers. When inquisitive Clovis finally discovers the answer from Fernand Frog, he doesn't have much time to dwell on it because M'sieu Blue Jay is about to make a meal of his good friend Gaston Grasshopper! Can Clovis save his friend and save the day?
The late Mary Alice Fontenot (1910-2003), a Louisiana native, authored thirty books, including nineteen in the Clovis Crawfish Series. A former journalist and kindergarten teacher, Fontenot was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Acadian Arts Council in 1998, and, in 2001, she was awarded the first Honorary Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award, presented by the State Library of Louisiana and the Louisiana Center for the Book.
Illustrator Keith Graves received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1981 and completed further studies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. In addition to illustrating Pelican's Clovis Crawfish and Petit Papillon, he is the author and illustrator of nine children's books. Graves lives with his wife, Nancy, and their twins, Max and Emma, in Austin, Texas.
