Ian Smith 'Smithy' or 'Smudger' to his Newcastle colleagues - has had a long involement in Rugby Union. He has been the Director of Rugby at Northumbria University and a coach with the Falcons Academy; today, as Education and Welfare Officer with the Falcons, he helps players to reflect on and develop their education and post-rugby careers. Ian also works as the rugby summariser for BBC Radio Newcastle. In 1994 he coached Northumbria University to their first UAU Championship win at Twickenham - his personal standout moment in rugby.
